Prenatal Genetic Care: New possibilities for prenatal detection of developmental defects

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |
2017

Abstract

Genetics has a strong place in normal prenatal care, although it deals with most rare diseases. Despite their rarity, their risk affects everyone.

In recent years the risk of some genetic diseases has increased with the increasing age of parents. Advances in genetic testing methods (especially in the sequencing of the new generation) make it possible to detect some of these risks in a timely manner, and planning / expecting parents offers important information for the reproduction option.

Despite all the progress, it is still necessary to keep in mind the limitations of the individual examinations and not to forget the individuality of each individual, which is even more important in prenatal and perinatal care than elsewhere.
