Interstitial lung disease in childhood

Publication at Second Faculty of Medicine |

Abstract

Interstitial lung disease is a rare occurrence of diffuse inflammatory affections of the pulmonary parenchyma. They have better prognosis in their childhood than adults, yet they can lead to the development of diffuse pulmonary fibrosis and respiratory insufficiency.

It is therefore necessary to diagnose it in time and start treatment as soon as possible. In case of suspected interstitial lung disease, diagnosis should be focused on professional pediatric pneumological workplaces capable of performing a comprehensive examination, including lung biopsy.

The main part of the treatment is the long-term administration of immunosuppressive drugs. Long-term care for these children must be closely co-ordinated by a medical practitioner with a GP for children and adolescents.
