Celastrus Paniculatus: plant nootropics

Publication at Faculty of Science |
2018

Abstract

Celastrus paniculatus is a deciduous climbing plant that grows wild on the entire Indian subcontinent and is used in traditional folk medicine to improve memory and mental function. The plant is medicinal and seed oil is used as a traditional ayurvedic medicine.

It has been shown that its water-soluble substances have antioxidant properties, reduce lipid peroxidation and protect nerve cells. The aqueous extract of the seed has cholinergic activity, improving memory performance.

The mechanism by which C. paniculatus improves cognitive function may involve elevated levels of acetylcholine in the brain.
