Abstract

Prof. Dr.

Arnaldo Cantani (1837-1893), a pioneer Neapolitan diabetologist, was born in the north Bohemian townlet Hainspach (now Lipová) where his grandfather Dr. Franz Jaroschka (1762-1839) as well as his father Dr.

Vincenz Cantani (1795-1875) - a son of Joannes Cantani, an advocate in Königgrätz - served as personal physicians to Imperial Altgraves of Salm-Reifferscheidt-Hainspach. After spending 5 years of early childhood in the birthplace, together with his mother Adelina (1811-1887) and his sister Maria (1838-), he followed the father to Prague in 1842, later graduated here from the Medical Faculty of Charles-Ferdinand University (1860), and thereafter he worked as a resident physician at the Medical clinic headed by Prof.

Dr. Anton Jaksch until he was offered a chair at the University of Pavia (1864) to stay forever in the native country of his paternal ancestors.
