2018

Abstract

Onychomycosis is a common fungal infection of the nail unit. In most cases, onychomycosis is caused by dermatophyte, occasionally can be caused by yeast and nondermathophyte fungi.

Onychomycosis accounts for 50 % of all nail disease cases. Diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, HIV, obesity and immunosuppression are predisposing factors.

Current treatment of onychomycosis includes oral or topical antifungal agents supplemented by chemical or mechanical debridement of the infected nail. Alternative treatment includes lasers and photodynamic therapy.
