440 years since the birth of William Harvey (1578-1637), the discovery of blood circulation

Abstract

William Harvey graduated ion the medical faculty of Padua University in 1602. In 1607 he was appointed to the Royal Medical Society.

He performed animal experiments, his interest was focused on heart valves functioning. From his observations he derived conclusion that the heart is pumping blood, which circulates continuously in the body.

In 1629 he published his crucial work "Exercitatio anatomica de motu cordis et sanguinis in animalibus". In 1636 he was a member of English mission to Prague.

In his late years he Publisher several works on embryology, hence, he is considered to be a founder of this field of medicine. He died on stroke at 79 years of age.
