Extracellular proteolytic enzymes of microbial origin are often employed in various branches of industry. The neutral and alkaline proteinases of Bacillus subtilis belong to the most extensively used enzymes.

However, these proteinases are also of great significance from the theoretical point of view. They are synthesized during the post-exponential and stationary phases of growth and the control of their formation is somehow related to sporogenesis.
