Effect of drugs at the level of affecting the function of enzyme

Publication at Third Faculty of Medicine |
2014

Abstract

The article dealing with the effects of drugs on the enzyme level is the second in a row and it follows the previous review on the effects of drugs acting on the receptor. The most common types of reversible enzyme inhibition (competitive, non-competitive and acompetitive) are discussed as well as irreversible inhibition.

The specific examples close to the clinician show both the advantages of each type of action and the problems associated with them. Other sections deal with drugs inducing activation of the enzyme or enzyme direct substitution.

The last part deals with specific situations that affect the resulting effects, such as the location of the target enzyme or importance of transport and metabolic systems modifying the effect.
