There are known differences between men and women regarding lung cancer. The objective of this case-control study was to assess the influence of oestrogen on lung cancer incidence.

A total of 330 women were interviewed - 92 cases with lung cancer and 238 controls. Interviews were based on a structured questionnaire.

Multiple variables were monitored including use of hormone replacement therapy, oral contraceptives, length of period between menarche and menopause, length of menstruation cycle, dysmenorrhoea, intensity of bleeding during menstruation, number of childbirths and breastfeeding. Unconditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI).

All results were adjusted for age and smoking history (pack-years).
