Analysis of the use of static stretching in sports training

Abstract

From a historical point of view were the positive effects of static stretching uncritically over-estimated, this was evident in the structure of warming up before performance. The current view on the application of static stretching and its effects on the musculoskeletal system is more critical with the consequence of the reduction of its use, above all in the initial part of the training units and, on the contrary, its more frequent insertion at the end of the training.

Studies and research projects on this topic however often have different conclusions and obscurities in the theoretical plane can be the basis for non-system approaches in practical applications. The questionnaire survey conducted on the 163 respondents from different sports showed that for 79 % of them, static stretching is still a regular part of their warm up.

The most frequent (100%) showed esthetic-coordinating sports (gymnastics, aerobics) and combat sports (90 %). The dominant role of a static stretching at the end of the training unit was confirmed by 92 % of respondents who marked its regular or irregular usage.

In total, 58 % of respondents said they were not informed of doubts about to use the static stretching in the warm up. At present, there is not enough evidence to support nonselective exclusion of static stretching from this process.
