Overlooked Founders? : King Ottokar II and Locator Hirzo in Modern Toponymy of České Budějovice

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2017

Abstract

The South Bohemian city České Budějovice was founded in 1265 by Ottokar II of Bohemia and planned by his burgrave Hirzo of Klingenberg. Although the significance of both these historical figures was already recognized by some authors of historiographical and popularizing works in the 19th century, their symbolical presence in the local urban toponymy remained ambivalent for a long time.

The paper attempts to analyze the motivations of the modern political elites in Budějovice for the commemoration of two medieval figures in the public urban space. It describes and interprets the recurrent suggestions and discussions in the context of different political regimes during the 19th and 20th century.
