Abstract
Standard and Common Czech language play a key role in the current language situation in the Czech Republic. Various aspects of both these varieties have been discussed in specialized literature for decades.
However, there are still some fundamental questions where a consensus has not yet been reached. The basic variety of Czech to be used in language teaching is the standard Czech.
Common Czech should be taught later, to more advanced students.
