Starting Points for a New Physics Curriculum

Abstract

Physics curricula exist in a wide range of forms and there are many ways in which they can be developed. Two fundamental aims of school education (not only physics education) can be identified: to enable each learner to lead a life that is personally flourishing and to help others to do so too.

These aims can be translated into more specific goals by considering how human flourishing requires, e.g. the acquisition of a broad background understanding, moral education, preparation for work. Typically it is hard to reveal why the given physics curriculum contains the particular elements.

It seems to be of a frequent occurence that a new physics curriculum is created on the basis of minute changes of existing curricula. In our opinion, namely views of physicists and other natural scientists using physics in their profession should be identified, analyzed and utilize for creating a new physics curriculum.
