Magnetic nanoparticles have received extensive attention in the biomedical research, e.g. as prospective contrast agents for T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The ability of a contrast agent to enhance the relaxation rate of hydrogen nuclei in its vicinity is quantified by its relaxivity.

In this work, the results on the transverse relaxivity r2 of nanoparticles of ε-Fe2O3 substituted with diamagnetic Al atoms and coated with amorphous silica layer are presented with focus on its dependence on temperature, external magnetic field and the thickness of silica coating.
