Abstract
The paper is focused on problem of gender identity as well as intercultural elements and motifs in the works of Ivo Andric, particularly on complex differences in cultural traditions. We can identify several themes in Andric's approach: melancholy, contrasting subjectivity and especially embodiment of evil as an occurrence that is immanent and could be considered vocal opposition to singular identity that automatically rejects any in-between identities.
The representations of "otherness" in Andric's works are not only binary oppositions of a "foreign" as rivaling non-European tradition described through the prejudices and stereotypes, but also it is the "portrayal of otherness" in the gender perspective on the analysis of short story Anika that epitomizes gender pressure on female heroines.
