Abstract

The earliest display of yogi is found on the seals of the Indus Valley civilization (about 4000 BC). The Vedas (about 2000 BC) do not give us any evidence of the systematic practice of yoga.

In the Vedic period the Sun (Surya) was of a greatest importance - Gayatri mantra. The first occurrence of the word YOGA is found in the Katha upanishada (300 BC).

Patanjali, an early Indian sage, was the first to systematize the principle and practice of yoga in his collection of sutras called Yogasutra.
