A Superstition, or a Source of Inspiration? Dealing with the Supernatural in the 18th and 19th Century English Adaptations of Old Norse Literature

Abstract

In my paper, I will examine how the supernatural elements in the Norse sources influenced the evaluation of the Nordic past in scholarly works of early 19th century and how they were reflected in different genres of literary adaptations of the Old Norse literature with a focus on the works of Walter Scott.
