Abstract

The Khasi tribe, one of the few matrilinies in the world, has been underrepresented in academia. If noticed by media, it is being reffered to as a living matriarchy.

What is the realistic position of women and men in Khasi society? This paper discusses the anthropological terms matriliny and matriarchy in their historical and conceptual evolution, and presents ethnographic data on the Khasi tribe based on litearture review as well as author's own field-research.
