Abstract

The article focuses on the painting Josefina by Josef Mánes and on the evolution of its public image in Czech scientific literature, novels, press, theatre and film. The key point is Josefina's nickname "Czech Mona Lisa".

The article explores its origin and various levels of meaning that correspond with the general stereotypes of Manes scholarship.
