Abstract

Based on the research of film adaptation as intersemic translation in the context of contemporary translation studies, this paper explores the phenomenon of film adaptation of literary works during the so-called new wave of Czechoslovak cinema of the 1960s. Emphasis is placed on the filmic version of Vladislav Vančura's iconic novel Marketa Lazarová.

Similarly to interlingual translation, intersemotic translations can be evaluated by the translation method and strategy used, examining individual procedures and solutions as well as the impact of a broader (i.e. social, cultural and political) context on the translation process.
