Abstract

The topic of the chapter is the reception of mythological motifs connected to the Old Norse deity Óðinn in the Nordic ballads. The study focuses on the roles, features, and evaluation of Óðinn in the Faroese ballads in comparison with the original Old Norse tradition in context of the overall transformation of the literary representation of the world, especially of the transition from fate to the contrast between good and evil.

The collective monograph deals with religion-related stories and motifs in the Scandinavian ballads from the perspective of literary studies, religion studies and linguistics.
