Abstract
Chlorhexidine is a highly effective antimicrobial agent commonly used in hospitals, primarily for skin decontamination, by invasive procedures, but also as disinfection dominantly in stomatology. Anaphylactic reactions to chlorhexidine are rare but potentially life-threatening complications.
The authors report a case of a near fatal anaphylactic reaction to chlorhexidine in 70-years old woman after local use of this agent into profound defect with gangrene on diabetics' foot as a part of complex therapy of the disease. Specific IgE antibody to chlorhexidine has been identified by ImmunoCAP and allergy to chlorhexidine has been evaluated as a probable cause of anaphylactic shock.
