Abstract

The paper presents the results of geomorphological research of river terrace system and evolution of the Eger valley in the western part of the Bohemian Massif. The Eger River terraces originated in complex and variable morphotectonic and climate-morphogenetic conditions that existed during the late Cenozoic evolution of the valley.

A morphostratigraphical system of Pliocene fluvial sediments and seven levels of the accumulation river terraces of the Quaternary age were determined (Figure 2). Correlation of terrace flights in the longitudinal profile of the Eger River with current stratigraphical classification of the Quaternary (Table 1) enabled to specify the range and main phases of the Quaternary tectonic processes in the region.

The Quaternary tectonics in the Smrčiny Mts is possible to prove only by uplifted relics of the I. terrace, namely about 10 m in comparison with its level in the Chebská pánev Basin. In the Chlumský práh Horst area, the oldest Pleistocene terraces (I. and II.) originated during the Tiglian period were uplifted approximately about 15 m.

The IIIrd terrace, which is younger than 1.78 My, is at this crystalline horst uplifted about 2-4 m.
