Blends in the electronic neological database Neomat

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2016

Abstract

The present article deals with blends in the electronic neological database Neomat created at The Institute of the Czech Language of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The paper is divided into three sections; the first one aims at delineating the concept of neologism, subsequently covering the practical aspects of searching for novel expressions.

The second part focuses on the word-formation process of blending and proposes a classification of blends. Finally, the last section, based on blends attested in the neological database Neomat, examines those whose second components seem productive, and scrutinizes their structure as well as their origin and semantics, while attempting to pinpoint the difficulties involved in classifying them.
