Cardiometabolic/metabolic syndrome (MetSy) represents cluster of cardiovascular risk factors and insulin resistance. We examined 243 patients with present MetSy and 204 individuals without MetSy with similar distributions of gender and age for plasma surrogate markers of cholesterol homeostasis (lathosterol, campesterol and p-sitosterol).
The MetSy group exhibited higher concentrations of cholesterol biosynthesis and lower values for markers of cholesterol absorption. The components of MetSy are in close relationship with all the markers, insulin being more tightly bound than glucose and TAG than HDL-C with these markers.
