During the interwar period the development of the population in Czechoslovakia reflected long-term reproductive trends (decreasing fertility and mortality) and the effects of contemporary political and economic developments. The populations both countries followed similar paths of development, the difference being that fertility in Czech lands tended to be lower than in Slovakia and the mortality conditions in Slovakia were worse.
