NEONATOLOGISTS' WIEW ON EARLY SUPPORT OF MOTHERS WITH PREMATURE INFANTS

Abstract

Introduction:15 million babies are born prematurely every year. Premature infants (PI) are at high risk of development.

Early intervention is crucial for the development, prevention or minimizing of disability and disease. Mothers require sufficient level of knowledge about the development and behavior of PI.

The aim of this paper is to show the perspective of physicians on relevant contributions for the situation of mothers in neonatology centers. The results are a part of the output of the research focused on health literacy of mothers of PI.

Methods: Participants were physicians, neonatologists which were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and analyzed using cluster analysis.

Results: Mothers need a multidisciplinary team to help them optimally support the development of PI. Conclusion: A special educator should be an integral part of the team.

He/she would recommend suitable options, methods and procedures for working with PI.
