Abstract

The chapter deals with the settlement history of the Ore Mountains in the Middle Ages - initial settlement activities, permanent settlement, settlement forms and structures, origin of villages, towns and castles, mining activities and late medieval abandoment processes. The deserted medieval village of Spindelbach is described as an example.
