Targeted prevention of stroke

Abstract

Stroke is the second most common cause of mortality in our countries. 1/3 of patients die within 1 month, 1/3 has permanent consequences. Consistent intervention of all risk factors, whether in primary or secondary prevention, is crucial in influencing the prevalence of the disease.

In this case, arterial hypertension is the primary risk factor where consistent blood pressure control is often causal for stroke prevention, particularly the high pulse pressure is a significant predictor of stroke. Correct choice of pharmacological intervention is crucial for primary and secondary prevention.

Medicaments that affect renin-angiotensin-aldosteron system provide the most protective evidence, ideally when combined. Let's not forget that use of these medicaments in fixed combinations is optimal for adequate adherence to the therapy of our patients.

To minimize the consequences of vascular events, not only ideal pharmacological treatment, but also early intervention of stroke centers and subsequent comprehensive care (nutrition, physiotherapy, ergotherapy) are required.
