History and physical examination plays key role in the evaluation of abdominal pain etiology. Initially, it is not important to find an accurate diagnosis of acute abdominal pain, but to distinguish "surgical" pains from "non-surgical".
Increased attention should be focused on seniors and immunosuppressed individuals in whom may acute abdominal pain present atypically with a high risk of complications. In the case of chronic abdominal pain, it is essential to distinguish the organic cause from functional etiology.
