Abstract

Prolactin is an important hormone that participates in male sexual appetence. Prolactin has a significant effect on 5-alpha reductase in the context of the development of testosterone-dependent diseases.

Increased levels of prolactin (hyperprolactinemia) in men significantly affect their sexuality (erectile dysfunction); in many cases also their fertility. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the correlation between erectile dysfunction and hyperprolactinemia.

The results of this study confirm the effect of hyperprolactinemia on erectile function of men and the subsequent clinical improvement of this dysfunction after treatment with Bromocriptine. Spearman's correlation unambiguously confirms the dependence between prolactin values in peripheral blood and the results of the International Index of Erectile Function Questionnaire (IIEF) (rs = -0,542, n = 38, p < 0,001).
