Psychological aspects of diabetes patient care

Abstract

Patients with diabetes frequently need psychological support throughout their life span from the time of diagnosis. Psychological aspects play the crucial role in the patient's self-care.

Low adherence to treatment regimen decreases its efficacy due to insufficient disease control and increased amount of complications. These factors significantly negatively influence patient's quality of life and lead to growing need of healthcare utilization.

This review article introduces most relevant psychological aspects of diabetes. Points to general associations between emotions and behavioral correlates of the disease, mentions specific psychosocial factors and options of psychological intervention.

Special focus points to the issue of psychiatric comorbidities. Psychological diagnostics and treatment planning in clinical practice illustrates mentioned case study.
