Abstract

The article places diachronic research in the broader context of modern linguistic theorizing and new empirical methods. Emphasis is placed on the socio-cognitive grounding of linguistic structure and searching for cognitively plausible explanations of the reorganization grammatical and lexical systems.

Attention is paid to the ways in which quantitative methods can contribute positively to a better understanding of incompletely preserved linguistics material.
