The role of inhaled corticosteroids in the therapy of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Publication |
2018

Abstract

With groving body of evidence about chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), there is a significant shift in the opinions and guidelines regarding the therapy of COPD. The role of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) is not assured in CODP any more.

But in the therapy of astma COPD overlap (ACO) as well as in the therapy of patients with COPD exacerbations despite LAMA/LABA combination as a part of triple therapy or as a substitution to LAMA/LAB is more then appropriate. The cardiovascular risk of the patients could be decissive for the therapeutic modality.

New markers for predicition of the outcomes of ICS therapy are investigated such as eosinophilia in the periferal blood. The adverse effects of the ICS are not conisistent, but they differ according to the used molecule.
