To play is to yield oneself to a kind of Magic Hugo Rahner, Abendland and Play

Abstract

Playing has never been subject of an extensive christian dogmatic scrutiny. Against this background, the contribution of Hugo Rahner is a noteworthy exeption.

Rahner, in the middle of the 20th century gathered scriptural and patristic evidence opening door for playing to enter into the forum of dogmatics; by the same token Rahner sketched an outline of such possible dogmatic approach. Briefly introducing playing and the difficulties associated with its cognitive interpretation, the contribution presents Hugo Rahner and his approach towards playing as presented mostly in his seminal writing "Der Spielende Mensch".

Outstanding points of interest of his contribution (that has enjoyed a number of re-editions) will be tentatively outlined in the context of an overly rising interest in playing as such.
