Abstract

Research into natural sciences and humanities was enhanced in the first half of the 19th century by the private scholar Count Georg Franz August Buquoy (1781-1851), who was a prominent representative of the "Naturphilosophie" period. His interdisciplinary scientific interests included mathematics, physics, chemistry, physiology and other scientific disciplines, as well as national economics and philosophy.

Among other achievements this led in 1838 to the founding of the first European nature reserve at Žofín primeval forest.
