Phraseological Minimum of German

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2020

Abstract

Phraseological Minimum of German is an output of the project "Creating the German-Czech Dictionary of the Phraseological Minimum", realized at the Faculty of Arts of the Charles University. In the first phase of the project a list of the most frequent German phrasemes was compiled, which were in the second phase lexicographically processed from a bilingual German-Czech perspective.

Source material was drawn from the phraseological handbooks published after 1997. The data obtained were further examined in two language corpora and hardly verifiable expressions in questionnaire research.

The new phraseological minimum counts 650 phrasemes, which have been assessed as the most frequent and most common idiomatic and partially idiomatic expressions and which can be considered from the didactic point of view as a suitable and empirically validated set of units for German students. Despite some inevitable imperfections of the research discussed in this article, the presented project fills the gap in the German-Czech phraseology and contributes to further development in this area.

The complete list is available to all interested parties and can be used, for example, as a basis for a phraseological textbook or a dictionary.
