The chapter focuses on the impact the key spiritualist philosopher - Félix Ravaisson (1813-1900) - had on the first major work of Paul Ricoeur (Freedom and Nature). The author shows that Ricœur's own phenomenological description of habit is deeply inspired by Ravaisson (i.e. by his 1838 "Of Habit") but distances itself from the more speculative metaphysics that Ravaisson proposed.
