Abstract
The chapter deals with the character of Indian woman as portrayed by the Romantic writers: José de Alencar, Bernardo Guimarães and Alfredo d'Escragnolle Taunay. At the same time, it pinpoints the moment of the division of Brazilian fiction into two branches, the symbolist one and the documentary.
