Publication at Faculty of Education |
2018

Abstract

The Grand Dukes of the House of Habsburg governed Tuscany between 1737 and 1859 except for the Napoleonic Wars period. Nevertheless, beginning in the fi rst half of the 19th century their position was strongly jeopardised by the growing Italian nationalism, and aft er the defeat of Austria in 1859 the family went into exile.

The study briefl y summarises the development of this family line from the second half of the 18th century and attempts to analyse its specifi cs within the dynasty during the 19th and 20th centuries.
