Muslim Noblemen in the Habsburg Empire

Publication at Faculty of Education |

Abstract

Since the Reformation, the Catholics were not the only ones to be granted titles by the Habsburgs who, ruling also the Holy Roman Empire, promoted followers of other beliefs recognized in the area; the year 1789 saw the ennoblement of the first unbaptized Jew. The practice was, however, quite different with the Muslims.

No Muslim community of demographic relevance had ever existed in the Empire until the annexation of Bosna and Herzegovina in 1908 and no sources document the ennoblement of Muslims after that year. Moreover, the incorporation into Austria-Hungary was not followed by the practice of granting titles.
