Despite major investments into the remediation of wastewater and the reduction of fertilisers, the quality of small river surface water in agricultural and rural regions of Czechia is still very low. To such problematic rivers belongs the Mastník stream.

It runs through an agricultural area and flows into the Vltava River, thence into Slapy Reservoir. Using data of indicator concentrations from studied profiles of the Vltava River Basin Authority and from the author's monitoring profile, the quality of the water has been analysed.

It has been discovered that the steps that had been taken - primarily the construction of wastewater treatment plants - have led to a gradual improvement in the surface water quality by some parameters. Presently, the final quality of the water is being influenced by a growing concentration of chlorophyll-α and by a lack of dissolved oxygen.

In the case of the Mastník stream, it is particularly necessary to improve the remediation of wastewater from small households, and to reduce the impact of water erosion on agricultural soil.
