NO evaporative cooling in the (2)pi(3/2) state

The scattering at ultralow temperatures of fermionic N-14 O-16 molecules in the metastable (2)pi(3/2) is considered, under the influence of parallel electric and magnetic fields. It is found that a magnetic field of several thousand Gauss can enhance the ratio of elastic-to-inelastic collision rates.

The magnetic field can therefore assist the electric field in increasing this ratio. Evaporative cooling of NO is feasible only in the presence of combined magnetic and electric fields and for temperatures above about 70 mK.
