A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned? The Discourse of Thrift in a Changing Czech Society

Publication at Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts |
2019

Abstract

The question of whether and how to save money is an integral part of family and public discussions and sometimes arouses passionate emotions. According to the authors of the book, the ground of these discussions is not only the ambiguity of the notion of thrift, but above all the moral dimension of it and of other economic notions.

The authors show that people engage in discursive struggles about the meaning and evaluation of economic notions, in which power, identity and often social dignity are involved. In general, the authors draw attention to the important role played by language and communication in the economy.
