Abstract
The text tries to analyze the question of the development of nationalism in the Balkans from the broad theoretical perspective. It examines first the dichotomic concepts of "western" and "eastern" nationalism and later concentrates on the crucial role the religion has played in the process of emergence of the Balkan nation states.
The role of religion is stressed as a specific phenomenon that marked the character of the development of nationalism in this European area.
