Abstract
The paper is devoted to the origination and the development of the notion of compact operator. The journey to its modern form illustrates the idea of passage from finite to infinite, from discrete to continuous.
The influence of problems of mathematical physics is emphasized and the role of integral equations leading to an interconnection of notions of algebra, analysis, geometry and topology is described.
