Abstract

Diseases of the cardiovascular system, that arise from atherosclerosis, are the main cause of mortality in the Czech Republic. The atherogenesis begins to develop and progress, potentiated by risk factors, during childhood and adolescence.

Its first functional manifestation is endothelial dysfunction. From the morphological manifestations, primary lesions, lipid strips and precursors, can be found in children.

The most effective way to reduce mortality on cardiovascular disease is prevention. Primary prevention, initiated during childhood, is based on the assumption that reducing cardiovascular risk in children will lead to a decrease in the incidence of clinical complications of atherosclerosis in adults.

In the Czech Republic, selective screening of risk children and adolescents is put into practice.
