Transitive Adjectives in Diachrony: a Case Study of Tóweard

Publication at Faculty of Arts |
2018

Abstract

This paper investigates the category of transitive adjectives with the focus on tóweard as one of the lesser-known members of this class. While an adjectival tóweard is nowadays considered obsolete, the word continues to function as both a preposition and an adverb in Present Day English.

The aim of this study is to explore the morphological, syntactic and semantic developments which tóweard underwent between the Old English and Middle English (ME) period.
