Abstract

The 18th century was a period in which the foundations of modern Czech literature, industry, commerce, and ultimately banking and modern society gradually developed. It is connected with many events aiming (whether covertly or evidently) to support the idea of Czechness, to celebrate our national history, to promote new ideas, or to revive old ideas and intentions banished to oblivion by the political situation.

The Dvůr Králové and Zelená Hora Manuscripts were also a part of this development. Approximately thirty years after the appearance of these manuscripts, fake coins known as Kilián's forgeries were minted.

Made in 1849, they were festive coins bearing the motto IN DEO FORTITUDO commemorating some of the personalities connected with the Bohemian Revolt, which took place from 1618 to 1621. They point to a striking political radicalisation of Czech society.
