Abstract

The article focuses on prompting of children to display assertivity. It is based on fieldwork in one extended Romani family from Eastern Slovakia.

The practice is analyzed on several examples and the analysis is embedded in a broader cultural context. "Prompting to be assertive" is considered as one facet of language socialization in the locality. It is both approached as a realization of the local communicative style, as well as a practice through which the children are encouraged to display their personality.

The practice is also relevant in the recognition of intention of speakers in interaction.
